Can Products Containing Magnets Be Shipped from China?
Many consumer electronics and ecommerce products contain magnets even when they are not normally described as “magnetic products.” Standard motors, speakers, audio gear, phone accessories, mounts, holders, magnetic closures, toys, electronic accessories, packaging components, and other consumer items may all contain permanent magnets.
The Practical Question Isn’t Simply “Does it contain a magnet?”
For brands manufacturing or sourcing these products in China, a more useful set of operational evaluations includes:
✓ International shipping feasibility
✓ Air transport regulations
✓ Magnetic inspection & testing needs
At E-Commerce Express, we prefer to review the product and intended shipping route in advance before recommending a fulfilment and shipping solution. A product containing a small magnetic component should not automatically be treated as the same type of product as every other magnetic product shipping from China.
What Is Magnetized Material?
In transport terminology, magnetic materials classified as “magnetized material” have a more specific meaning than simply “a product that contains a magnet.” For air transport, the magnetic field strength measured at the package surface or at a specified distance can matter because strong magnetism can cause magnetic interference damage to delicate aircraft navigation instruments.
For air transport, applicable IATA dangerous goods provisions and carrier acceptance rules may require an assessment of the magnetic field of the finished package. Specific limits and classification must be checked against the current applicable requirements, rather than inferred from the presence of a magnet alone.
🟢 General Cargo Status
Some finished packages containing magnetic components may be accepted as general cargo when they meet the applicable air-carrier criteria.
⚠️ Magnetized Material (UN 2807)
Where the prepared package meets the applicable classification criteria, the shipment may be subject to specific air-transport acceptance, marking, documentation, or handling requirements.
🚫 Not Accepted for Air Transport
Packages that exceed applicable acceptance limits may require changes to packaging, an alternative channel, or another transport mode. The current carrier and regulatory requirements must be confirmed before shipment.
This distinction is critical for ecommerce brands. The magnet type—whether cheap ferrite or high-grade rare earth neodymium magnets—its position inside the product, the quantity packed together, the orientation of the components, magnetic shielding, and the final packaging configuration can all affect the practical shipping assessment.
This is why we do not recommend classifying every magnetic ecommerce product based only on the product name or the presence of a magnet.
Why Is Shipping Magnetized Material by Air More Complicated?
Air transport requires attention to the magnetic field emitted by the finished package, because sufficiently strong magnetic fields may affect aircraft equipment. Applicable rules and carrier acceptance must be checked for the proposed shipment.
For an ecommerce seller, the shipping assessment must focus on the finished package, not only the individual magnetic component.
Depending on the product, packaging and proposed route, the carrier or logistics partner may request a magnetic inspection or air-transport classification report. If testing is needed, we confirm the appropriate report type, provider and estimated cost before proceeding; there is no universal testing fee for every SKU.
Therefore, stating that “this product contains a magnet” is only the starting point of the assessment – not the final shipping decision.
Understanding Tariffs and Regulations for Export & Import
Import duties, product safety requirements and export controls may apply to particular magnetic products. Their applicability depends on the finished product, tariff classification, destination and current rules; these requirements should not be assumed to apply to every item containing a magnet.
🇺🇸 US Product Safety
Certain products, including some magnet sets, may fall within specific CPSC requirements. Applicability depends on the product and intended use; 16 CFR Part 1262 is not a blanket rule for all magnetic consumer goods.
📊 US Import Tariffs
Duties and any additional trade measures depend on the correct HTS classification and current tariff rules. A universal additional tariff should not be quoted for every permanent magnet or magnet-containing product.
🇨🇳 China Export Controls
Some controlled rare-earth materials, products or technologies may require additional review or licensing. Ordinary finished consumer products should not automatically be treated as controlled exports.
What About ADR 2017 and Road Transport?
ADR is the European framework for the international carriage of dangerous goods by road. The 2017 edition is historical; the currently applicable edition and transport-mode rules should be checked when relevant.
The treatment of magnetized material differs between air and road transport. A UN 2807 air-transport classification does not, by itself, establish that the same requirements apply to road transport. Requirements differ significantly by transport mode. A product that needs additional assessment for air transport should not automatically be assumed to have the same treatment under road transport.
Common Ecommerce Products That May Contain Magnets
Magnetic components are found in many ordinary consumer products. Examples that may require additional shipping review include:
- Speakers and audio drivers
- Motors and standard motors in small appliances
- Magnetic phone accessories
- Magnetic mounts, stands, and holders
- Products with magnetic closures or clasps
- Toys containing magnets (product-specific safety rules may apply)
- Consumer electronics and accessories containing magnetic components
- Magnetic tools or accessories sold as industrial or consumer products
- Gift boxes or packaging using magnetic closures
- Other consumer or industrial products containing permanent magnets, including rare-earth magnetic components
When there is uncertainty, clear product photos and technical documentation are much more useful than a short SKU description.
From Our Fulfilment Experience
In day-to-day ecommerce fulfilment, magnetic components may only become clear when we review product photos, technical specs, packaging, or the available shipping channels.
Discovering a magnetic characteristic only after customer orders are already waiting to ship causes operational delays and extra cost. The carrier may ask for a magnetic inspection report or an Identification and Classification Report before confirming acceptance.
For this reason, when a customer knows that a product contains a magnet, we prefer to know before inventory arrives at our China warehouse. Providing existing testing reports or supplier documentation at the assessment stage allows our team to confirm requirements with the freight forwarder early, avoiding unexpected delays.
Our Magnetic Product Assessment Process
Before recommending a shipping solution, we try to understand both the product and the intended fulfilment workflow.
Identify the Product & Intended Use
We review what the product is, how it is sold, and whether the magnet is a primary feature or only one component of the finished item.
Identify the Magnetic Component
We look at where the magnet is located and how it is used (e.g., in a speaker driver, motor, phone accessory, or closure).
Review Available Product Information
Evaluating SKU specs, magnet types, dimensions, weight, proposed packaging configuration, parcel quantities, and existing inspection reports.
Review Fulfilment & Shipping Requirement
Assessing DTC vs B2B movement, destinations, delivery routing, order volume, lead times, and channel speed requirements.
Confirm Testing / Assessment Needs
If a carrier requests a magnetic inspection or DGM report, we confirm report types, testing options, and estimated costs prior to proceeding.
Select a Practical Shipping Solution
Comparing options based on product traits, packaging, destination, documentation, carrier acceptance, and transit time to protect landed cost.
Packaging & Magnetic Shielding
For magnetic products, the arrangement of items inside a parcel or carton affects the magnetic field emitted by the finished package.
If a package requires magnetic-field reduction, suitable packaging adjustments or shielding may be considered with the logistics partner or a qualified provider. E-Commerce Express does not independently certify magnetic-field performance; acceptance depends on the finished package and any required assessment.
Choosing a Shipping Method for Magnetic Products
✈️ Air Parcel / Express
Acceptance depends on package magnetic traits and carrier rules. Some move as general cargo; others require reports or special handling.
🛫 Air Freight
Evaluated for larger replenishment shipments after checking finished packaging, documentation, and carrier acceptance criteria.
🚢 Sea Freight
An alternative when air transport is unsuitable. Does not exempt cargo from product or customs rules, but offers great volume capability.
Why Assessment Before Inventory Arrives Can Save Time
Discovering a shipping restriction after inventory arrives can delay fulfilment. Early assessment helps identify whether the proposed route requires additional information, a magnetic inspection, packaging changes or an alternative shipping method.
Informing your fulfilment partner before sending inventory gives the logistics team time to review practical options and reduce the risk of avoidable booking or compliance issues.
How Magnetic Product Fulfilment Fits into the E-Commerce Express Workflow
Once a magnetic product has been reviewed and an appropriate fulfilment approach is confirmed, it can be managed within the broader E-Commerce Express workflow. This includes receiving, storage, labelling, kitting, custom packaging, DTC order fulfilment, B2B shipping, Amazon FBA preparation, and international logistics.
Fulfilment and shipping should be planned together, with relevant carrier acceptance and customs requirements confirmed for the proposed route. No provider can guarantee customs clearance or final delivery in every case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can all products containing magnets be shipped by air?
Not always. The presence of a magnet does not by itself decide air-shipping eligibility. The finished package may need to be assessed against applicable air-transport criteria and the chosen carrier’s acceptance rules; some shipments may require testing, special handling or an alternative route.
Are there magnetic field restrictions for sea freight?
Air and sea transport are governed by different requirements. Although air-specific magnetized-material provisions should not automatically be applied to ocean freight, carrier, product and destination restrictions may still matter. We confirm the proposed sea-freight route before booking.
How much does DGM magnetic testing cost in China?
Costs vary by the report required, testing provider, product and packaging configuration. If a carrier requests a magnetic inspection or classification report, we can ask our logistics partner to confirm the current requirements and estimated cost.
What US tariffs apply to magnets imported from China?
There is no single tariff rate for all magnets or magnet-containing products. Applicable US duties and any additional trade measures depend on the finished product’s HTS classification and current rules. Importers should confirm the classification and applicable duties.
Do consumer magnetic products need CPSC compliance?
Some magnetic consumer products are subject to product-specific safety requirements. For example, certain magnet sets may fall under 16 CFR Part 1262, but the rule does not apply to every consumer item containing a magnet. The importer should confirm the requirements for the specific product.
Not Sure Whether Your Magnetic Product Can Ship from China?
If your product contains magnets and you are unsure which fulfilment or shipping solution is suitable, start by sending a product photo or link, a brief description, the main destination countries and whether you need DTC fulfilment or B2B shipping. You do not need to prepare every technical document before contacting us.
If the proposed route requires further assessment, we may request:
- Product name, SKU and available technical specifications
- Details of the magnetic component, if available
- Final packed dimensions and weight, where available
- Expected quantity per parcel or carton
- Destination and intended fulfilment/shipping method
- Any existing magnetic inspection or classification reports (only if available)
Based on the information provided, E-Commerce Express can review the intended fulfilment workflow, consult the logistics partner about carrier acceptance and identify whether further magnetic assessment, packaging adjustments or documentation may be needed.
